Garage Guides: How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Garage Door?

Fix a garage door

In a book named Garage, published by MIT Press, authors Olivia Erlanger and Luis Ortega Govela describe how garages across America quickly evolved from a simple place to store a car, to an “everything space.”

The American garage became a space that could all at once, be a stage for rehearsing rock bands, a storeroom, a gym, a wine cellar, and a place in which Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak (allegedly) started the technology company Apple.

If you need to fix a garage door, we can help.

How to Fix a Dented Garage Door

If your garage door is made from metal, you’re in luck. Just like car bodywork, a garage door can be hammered out in the event there’s a dent and quickly repaired.

Metal garage doors can also be fixed with replacement panels in some cases.

If you’re wondering how to fix a dent in a vinyl garage door, you might be in less luck. That’s because vinyl is a type of plastic and dents cannot be hammered out. They can be heat treated in some cases but it often leaves lasting marks that mean the door will never look as good as new again.

If you have a dented vinyl garage door, it might be best to cut your losses and invest in a replacement.

How To Fix a Squeaky Garage Door

Depending on the reason, it might be very easy or more challenging to fix your squeaky garage door. Before enlisting professional help, here are a few tests you can do yourself.

First, apply a water-displacing spray such as WD-40 to the hinges and mechanisms of the door. This will act as a lubricant, penetrant, and moisture displacer and might immediately prevent squeaking.

If you apply lubricant to the hinges and mechanisms but the squeaking persists, it might be possible that heat or changes to the door frame have caused warping due to expansion or retraction. Try closing the door as slowly as possible to identify the source of squeaking.

Some materials can be replaced or filed down to prevent squeaking. If the squeaking persists contact us. We can fix it!

How to Fix a Broken Garage Door

If your garage door appears to have completely broken there are a few tests you can conduct before you call us. First, check the batteries in any door-opening devices and replace them with 100% fresh batteries.

A lot of the time what appears to be a broken garage door is actually a broken door opening device or one which has run out of power. Next, if the device seems to work but the door opens slowly, use the aforementioned technique of lubricating the mechanical parts of the door.

In some cases, older door mechanisms become rusty with age. That causes friction and stiffer, slower opening speeds. If you’re still uncertain about the issue, call us on (916) 628-3639!
